DOMAIN

Situated over 15 hectares in Dezize-les-Maranges, close to Santenay, Domaine Jean-François Bachelet produces a wonderful line-up of wines:

Reds : Maranges 1er Cru Fussières, Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, Pommard Les Chanlins

Whites : Santenay, Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet

Jean-François Bachelet is now assisted by his two sons, Marc and Alex. Faithfully following in their father’s footsteps, they clearly share the same values as their parents: respect, courtesy, hospitality, generosity …….

Both in their thirties, and having gained invaluable experience from well-known properties in Burgundy, the Côtes du Rhône and as far afield as Australia, the Bachelets tend their vines with extreme care; assiduously working the soil and opting for green pruning, hand harvesting, etc.

THE WINES

In general, vinification takes around 20 to 25 days, with a cold pre-fermentation soak lasting about a week. Their wines pay homage to the terroir, and spend 12 to 16 months maturing in barrel, with 20% to 30% in new oak.

The results are stunning. Their reds especially avoid the slightly wild or rustic edge that one sometimes associate with wines from Maranges or Santenay. On the contrary, they excel in an abundance of fruit, sound structure and elegance.

The whites come across as very pure, open, upfront and dynamic – not unlike the winemakers themselves, in fact. The Santenay whites occupy an all-essential price point too often missing from a range, i.e. between the whites of the Côte Chalonnaise and the Grand Vins from the Côte de Beaune.
