Domaine C. Clerget

Christian Clerget

" La qualité du vin se joue dans les vignes. "

“Wine quality is determined in the vineyards”

THE DOMAINE

Domaine Christian CLERGET is a 6 hectare estate in Vougeot, which has seen four generations of wine growers work its vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-St-Denis, Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée, where the Pinot Noir grapes reach the pinnacle of their glory.

Christian and Isabelle Clerget live within the heart of their vineyards, in harmony with their land, as if they were an extension of their garden. They know each vineyard like the back of their hand and strive to respect each vine in order to produce the best possible wines, those which deliver the truest expression of their terroirs, without cheating nature.

Winemaking is about letting the fruit express itself

Short pruning, green harvesting, thinning by hand, ploughing the soil and harvesting by hand. The grapes are picked at peak maturity and never beyond this. Each bunch is sorted in the vineyards and again, on a sorting table, when the harvest reaches the winery.

The grapes are de-stemmed before going into vat, where the must will be transformed into wine. The harvest undergoes 2-3 weeks’ maceration, the time needed for the grapes’ rich constituents to pass into the juice. Christian carries out cap punching and pumping-over operations once a day, intervening as little as possible. After pressing, the wine goes into oak barrels for 18 months' ageing.  Christian racks the wine after malo-lactic fermentation, which takes place during this phase.  The wines are bottled on the property without fining or filtration. The wines are honest, pure and well-balanced, with long-lasting textures on the palate and excellent ageing potential.

Care, passion, diligence, and time as an ally,… Christian puts in the hard work needed to produce the best possible wines, those which deliver the truest expression of their terroirs.

It’s all about the grapes.

Christian's philosophy is simple: the quality of a wine is determined in the vineyards. The Côte de Nuits is ideal land on which to grow Pinot Noir grapes. The vigneron has to understand how to make the most of this land and the vines, as naturally as possible.…allowing the bunches of grape to breathe, airing them by removing just enough of the excess leaves or unripe grapes.

Christian aims for low yields and the best quality fruit: mature, healthy grapes. As a result, each grape contains the ideal concentration of the exceptional properties needed to produce honest, pure, well-balanced wines with depth on the palate and excellent ageing potential.

Christian Clerget wines do not try to cheat the terroir. Christian strives to enable the terroir to express itself in the wines as naturally and honestly as possible.
