The vigneron’s trade merges with the word pleasure.

Alain Roy is all fireworks.
Born on 14 July (France’s Bastille Day), he knows how to make himself seen and heard. And he loves this theatrical production. The years haven’t changed anything. All he has to show physically for his 63 years are a few grey hairs. A veritable rocket, difficult to keep in one place. He has so much to do, between the vines and his three passions: fishing, hunting, and his friends. Just try to figure out how Alain Roy’s days don’t stretch over 30 hours…

But this turbulent boy, who his schoolmasters refused to keep in their classes, is still following his path today.
His domaine is situated at the foot of Montagny’s slopes - the romantic Château de la Saule, at the entrance
to the village of Montagny-lès-Buxy, in the Côte Chalonnaise.

Having for years vinified only Chardonnay, the sole grape variety in Montagny, Alain Roy has set himself a new
challenge. He has acquired several hectares of Givry so as to develop the vinification of red wines (Pinot Noir). There’s no doubt that Alain Roy’s Givrys will be wines that are supple, fresh, young, and above all, wines in which the man’s conviviality will be passed on to amateurs.

This is already the case for the domaine’s whites, which manage to remain superbly simple.

THE DOMAINE

Following the purchase of the Château de la Saule and its parcels of vines at the beginning of the nineteenth century in Montagny, in the Côte Chalonnaise, the domaine remained within the same family. For quality wines, Alain Roy attaches great importance to the age of the vine.

His domaine of almost 17 hectares is run with this in mind. For good vine growth, Alain Roy is also establishing techniques favouring the use of products that respect the environment. As a result, he takes part in research aiming to limit treatments that are hostile to the vineyard.

THE WINES

In the Montagny appellation, Alain Roy has only premiers crus in different parcels, which he prefers to blend.
A green-gold, then pale gold colour, with a nose of white flower aromas at times enhanced by notes of dry fruit
and a lively, round and pleasant palate, characterise the Château de la Saule’s wine.

Nothing is left to chance in the vinification of two cuvées in two different styles.

One is raised in vat for more freshness, the other in oak cask –120 casks of 228 litres – to obtain fleshy wines.

The conviviality of the vigneron shows up in his wines.
