Vinous Neal Martin Millésime 2020 (février 2022)

Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru - 91-93

The 2020 Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a lovely, well-defined bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and light autumn leaf scents - very natural and charming. The palate is medium-bodied and perhaps does not quite replicate the élan of the aromatics, yet it is underpinned by a fine bead of acidity, and there is grip on the fresh, balsamic-tinged finish. Give this three or four years in bottle.

Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes 1er Cru - 86-88

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos des Ormes 1er Cru has a bright nose with vivid red cherry and raspberry fruit, though there is a very slight metallic reduction that will require bottle age to address. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit on the entry that merges into more black fruit towards the finish. I would have liked a little more weight on the back end, though the acidity is commendable. Oddly, a little straight-laced for this vintage.

Wine Enthusiast

2016 Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis – 96

Reductive flintiness, smoke and red currant shine on the nose of this wine. The tart finesse of the red currant carries onto the slender, taut palate where freshness and elegance reign. Purity and intensity radiate from a concentrated core that seems weightless, giving a bright, sublimely vivid wine.

2016 Clos des Ormes Premier Cru Morey-Saint-Denis – 93

Hints of flinty reduction and lifted earthiness send conflicting messages of freshness and evolution on the nose of this wine that is rich with lifted red cherry. The palate then plumps for brightness and almost grassy verve, with lively, energetic fruit and tender but pervasive freshness. Notions of forest floor perfume everything with a slight, resonant pepperiness. Fine tannins appear on the resonant finish.

2016 Les Combottes Premier Cru Gevrey-Chambertin – 93

Notes of smoke, lifted cherry and flinty reduction unite on the nose of this wine. They also dance on the palate, where tart, bright and lively red cherry takes center stage. The body is slender but firm, crackling slightly with the fine tannins, outlined in its tartness by wonderful freshness. Lovely aroma echoes from afar and shows depth, liveliness and elegance.

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin – 92

In this wine, initial aromas of red currant and raspberry come with almost ethereal lift before a cloud of distant, subtle woodsmoke follows. The freshness promised by the nose is delivered on the sinuous, fresh and concentrated body. A wonderful firmness of fine tannin and pervasive freshness make this lissom and bright, shining with tart berry fruit.

white

Morey-Saint-Denis Blanc, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 17.5/20

Luxurious, almost sweetly-fruited with careful use of oak, this is a generous and forward, almost honeyed, style of wine.  It’s a guilty pleasure style of white wine.

red

Volnay, 1er cru, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 16.5/20

Solid but there is too much roughness around the edges for a classic Volnay.

Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 17/20

Accurate, rather spicy and bold, this is a decent Gevrey if not a complex one and it will drink relatively early but hold well into the medium term.

Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 17.5/20

Enticing and beautifully aromatic, this is an accurate, well-balanced and well-proportioned wine.  Nice nose, neat palate and a long finish, make this a valiant effort.

Morey-Saint-Denis, 1er Cru Clos des Ormes, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 18 /20

There are more lashings of spice and depth of fruit here and this suits this famous wine perfectly.  It needs time to settle but there is admirable energy and flair here.

Gevrey-Chambertin, 1er Cru Les Combottes, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 17.5/ 20

A smoother and lighter wine than the Clos des Ormes, and quieter in the glass, too, this is a decent Gevrey but it is a little too subtle and subdued when I am looking for more excitement and attack.

Clos-Saint-Denis, Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 17.5 /20

This is a tough and blunt wine, as is usually the case in richer vintages, but it isn’t pretty enough for me to get overly excited.  Granted there is muscle and brawn here but I need more polished fruit and aromatic depth to fill me with confidence.

Clos de la Roche, Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Lignier et Fils – 18 /20

There is more fruit density here and also more tannin and length and these are the building blocks for success.  While I prefer the charm of the Clos des Ormes, this will be a longer-lived wine and it will please those after a more classical style than the many of the modernist wines out there.

Domaine Georges Lignier, Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, Burgundy, France 2018 – 87

Gamay can deliver summer in a glass and while Beaujolais was suprisingly scarce on the ground in this tasting, this classic Passetoutgrain is an engaging, ambitioux blend of half Gamay, half Pinot Noir. There’s loads of tangy red fruit and a firm tannic profile – very grow-up and food-friendly.

The Good Life

  • The 2011 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Georges Lignier has a delightful bouquet with crisp redcurrant, mulberry and cedar aromas that are well integrated with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly candied entry, supple tannin but a rather simple, predictable finish that lacks the flair and opulence one seeks in this vineyard. Hanford Wines - Burgundy En Primeur 2017, January 2019

Georges Lignier, Morey Saint Denis

I  met  Georges  at  a village  tasting in 1994. His 1993 Bonnes Mares was the  best  of his extensive range and the star of the day. In good vintages, the Grand Crus are among the best in the region. Fermentation is allowed to run naturally resulting in high extract of both colour and flavour. Georges matures his best reds in 50% new oak. George’s nephew from Volnay, Benoit Stehly is usually found in one of the 100 parcels making up 16 hectares  of vines. Along with Jean Marc Millot, Lignier has been earmarked  by press and collectors  as one to grab. There’s a new cuvee of blended Morey 1er Cru in 2017.

Morey Saint Denis  2017

Since the last offer we’ve been lucky enough to try some older versions and happy to report that they are a big success, especially at 3 to  6 years old (2012 and 2014 are particularly good now). There’s  an inviting mix of loganberry, strawberry  and rhubarb  with a hint of hops  ... not  a common  descriptor  in these,  or  any parts.  Approachable and leaves you wanting more. Lovely. 2020 to 2024

Morey Saint Denis  1er Cru 2017

A new addition in 2017 shows the poise and balance I would expect from a merger of 1er Cru vineyards. Raspberry and rhubarb crumble with in a delicate envelope of fine acid and ripe tannin. Superb. 2020 to 2025

Morey Saint Denis  1er Cru Clos des Ormes 2017

Though one of the larger 1er Cru, this is wonderfully situated on the road out of Gevrey, immediately to the north  of the great Grand Crus. This year’s offering seems to be a good old fashioned, grainy tannined red  with deep  colour  and flavours. Behind that  structured facade are more ethereal, rose hip and cranberry fruits waiting to come to the fore. 2022 to

2029

Gevrey  Chambertin 1er Cru les Combottes 2017

Sandwiched between  Grand Crus, this always shows an extraordinary  fullness and depth, often the result of smaller berry size and so lower yields. It’s a big, black monster of a wine and stands out in a vintage that seems more one of fineness and femininity. Black cherry and chocolate, redcurrant  and tea leaf; unusual juxtapositions, but that’s what this unique piece of land gives. A wine with a difference. 2024 to 2032

Clos Saint Denis  2017

Being exposed to the drying north  winds fruit is often more  delicate, but always clean and with mineral notes. So, like the Morey villages, this is more delicate red/plum in colour but star bright. The 2017 was first into the winery; for the moment that has left it with a sappy and reductive attack that makes it tricky to taste from barrel. Underneath all that there  are stacks of supple strawberry and raspberry fruit with a stripe of clean vanilla running through the glass. A great en Primeur wine that will need 4 or 5 years to flower. 2025 to 2033

Clos de la Roche  2017

A small reduction in yield due to hail damage has focussed the concentration  ripe plum and red berry. There are crunchy, firm acids and truck loads of that tension that so often seems to define a super premium, young wine these days. Hints of vanilla and sweet sandalwood on the finish. Very fine. 2023 to 2033.

Bonnes Mares 2017

A little under one third of a hectare  produces 4 barrels (1200 bottles). As well as the one new cask there  is as much as 30% of whole bunch fermentation here; a small increase on a change  that  brought  Benoit  great  success  in  the  previous  vintage. Very  serious,  with brooding red fruits and, though the  iron rich soils have more  in common with the softer Morey reds, there is classic, Gevrey style lift and energy. 2025 to 2035

Jancis Robinson 29 JAN 2016

29 Jan 2016
· WINES OF THE WEEK
From €20.49, $22.99, £19.68 a bottle for the likes of Passetoutgrains and Marsannay, neither of which I have tasted alas. Four Walls have a couple of older vintages at £29.75 plus VAT - see below.
Before letting go of that 2014 burgundies that have been dominating this site for some weeks (apologies to burgundyphobes), I'd like to draw your attention to a domaine that seems to be getting better and better.
The Lignier family is widespread in Morey. Georges is Hubert Lignier's cousin and has enviable vineyard holdings, including more than a hectare of Clos de la Roche, nearly 0.3 ha of Bonnes Mares, and almost 1.5 ha of Clos St-Denis where the domaine is the most substantial owner. In all the domaine has
16 ha spread over 50 parcels cleverly acquired by Georges and now of a very handsome average age in excess of 50 years.
Georges Lignier's nephew Benoît Stehly pictured here (doesn't he look like a nice chap?) has been involved in the domaine since 2002 and took over sole responsibility in 2008, since which time the wines have become finer and finer. He is very much a vineyard man and, as Chas Peterkin of Four Walls
Wine puts it, 'he has reassuringly purple hands all year round'.
He works hard at allowing each vineyard to express itself.
Village wines are matured in old oak while premiers crus see 30% new oak and grands crus generally about 50%.
I was hugely impressed by the delicacy of most of the 2014s I tasted at H2Vin's tasting (the Clos St-Denis was still a bit of a monster) and Julia enjoyed a couple more at Handford's tasting. I see Richard was seduced by several of the Georges Lignier 2013s at last year's Handford tasting. The wine I thought was particularly good value was Domaine Georges Lignier 2014 Morey St Denis, the most delicate and refreshing village wine that was on offer en primeur at just over £200 for 12 bottles in bond. Stehly picked relatively early in 2014 according to Handford. He generally destems about 80% of the berries, employs a few days' cold soak before fermentation and does not filter the wines. They are beautifully aromatic and expressive but are not ridiculously priced.
In the UK the wines are imported by Four Walls, H2Vin,
Handford and Laithwaites, with Four Walls having particularly handsome holdings of older vintages back to many a 2009, including some bottles and halves – see their website. I was particularly impressed by the potential of the Domaine Georges Lignier, Grand Cru 2012 Clos de la Roche (£77.50 or £165 a magnum, plus VAT from Four Walls; £100 from Laithwaite's) and Domaine Georges Lignier, Clos des Ormes Premier Cru 2014 Morey St Denis
(£29.75 or £15.75 a half, plus VAT) currently offered by Four Walls of Sussex. Purple Pagers can read my tasting notes.
Laithwaite's have some older vintages too - mainly 2012s and 2013s. Georges Lignier wines are also offered by Laithwaite's to members of their British Airways Wine Club. Winesearcher also lists Exel wines in Scotland as a stockist and Chichester brokers L'Assemblage as offering the wines en primeur.
The wines seem to have reasonably good international distribution (the Cayman Islands is a particular speciality, I note) and are certainly not too difficult to find in Asia and the US – a reflection presumably of their sizeable vineyard holdings. The influential Rosenthal, already importers of Hubert Lignier wines, started importing Georges Lignier from 2014.

JANCIS ROBINSON Tasting notes on 2014 vintage. January 2016

2014 Gevrey-Chambertin

Simply bursting with red fruit - such clarity and precision! Lovely herbal note in the background too. Very supple tannin and lots of iodine character on the finish with subtle oak. Really beautifully judged. (RH) Drink 2018-2028 17

2014 Morey-St-Denis

Pale crimson. Nervy, appetising. Really very fresh and alluring. Yes please! Great balance. Transparent. VGV Drink 2019-2026 16.5

Clos des Ormes Premier Cru 2014 Morey-St-Denis

Hint of coffee but lots of lively fresh fruit. A bit dry on the end but serious intentions. Good stuff. Morey raciness in abundance. Long.

Drink 2022-2032 17

Aux Combottes Premier Cru 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin

Light crimson. Delicately scented and finely fragrant with delicious dark-red fruit. Then more savoury and spiced on the palate. This has really good intensity even though it is relatively light-bodied. Long and scented to the end. Savoury aftertaste makes it more complete. (JH) Drink 2017-2027 16.5

Grand Cru 2014 Clos St-Denis

Light crimson. A little occluded, sweet hard candy (sucky sweet) on the nose. Big and sweet but not very subtle at the moment. Edgy for now. It will presumably come right in the end with all that fruit tucked in. Drink 2024-2034 17

Grand Cru 2014 Clos de la Roche

Particularly pale ruby. Rather winning and subtle. Real grunt and lift. Not heavy, not concentrated but very much of our time. Lovely freshness. Drink 2020-2034 17.5

Grand Cru 2014 Bonnes Mares

Light crimson. Scented like the Gevrey Combottes. A touch of sweet spice. Then really impressive intensity and elegance, very refined tannins but not lacking a framework. Very fine. (JH)

Drink 2018-2030 17.5

Janvier 2016

James Handford MW - January 2016

I met Georges at a village tasting in 1994. His 1993 Bonnes Mares was the best of his extensive range and the star of the day. In good vintages, the Grand Crus are among the best in the region. Fermentation is allowed to run naturally resulting in high extract of both colour and flavour. Georges matures his best reds in 50% new oak. George’s son in law from Volnay, Benoit Stehly is usually found in one of the 100 parcels making up 16 hectares of vines. Benoit had picked the Grand Crus and 1er Crus in advance of the hottest weather resulting in a wonderfully lifted and fruit foot forward range.
Morey Saint Denis 2014
The vin de la maison is something in between the Chambolle and the Gevrey in style. Softer, more rounded and less definitive, but with a little more defined acidity and lift. Again, this was the pick of the village wines here and so let’s move straight onto the 1er Crus! 2018 to 2021.
Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Clos des Ormes 2014
Amazing! The 1er Crus have been harvested before the heat of late September and the result is stunning. just the right depth of red and some black fruits with a little firework character on the nose indicating some reduction in the early stages. Linear and lifted, classic Morey with a super cool finish. One of the Cotes de Nuits reds that minded me to compare 2014 with 2010. Great length. 2019 to 2015
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Combottes 2014
Squeezed between two Grand Crus the Combottes is a firm red from berries that never swell to the size of their neighbours. Super bright and with some depth this shows and eerie combination of plump, deep strawberry fruit, smooth vanilla and yet with great tone of minerality and acids. Very good indeed. 2021 to 2028
Clos Saint Denis 2014
Domaine Lignier is at its very best in Morey and so this is my pick. 3 of 7 barrels are new in 2014, two more barrels than last year so cranking up at last. Stunning, clean, raspberry and loganberry, classic Pinot fruits. There is a velvet texture, plenty of lift and the pressure on the mid palate seems to go on for ever. The Morey, Clos des Ormes and this Clos St Denis are
contiguous and give the best impression of the domaine. Difficult to resist all three! 2023 to 2033
Clos de la Roche 2014
The Roche has definitely benefitted from the early harvest regime in 2014. Some delicacy here with floral notes, white chocolate and soft pepper spice. Looking to be a little more fickle in it’s youth but will blossom in a decade. Even across the palate with some delicacy, floral notes and hints of white chocolate. Grand Crus as high and mighty as this are always difficult to taste young but the combination of power and delicacy is outstanding. 2025 to 2034

Bonnes Mares 2014

There’s a step up in power though the wine is far more muscular, taught and more typical of an ‘en primeur’ wine. Big, muscular and highly strung yet with a spritzy acidity that keeps it fresh and balanced. The Bonne Mares stays well in balance on the long finish. High class. This is a prime Grand Cru that will show 2014 as a vintage well worth buying into. A little under one third of a hectare producing just less than 3 barrels (900 bottles). Great poise and stunning length. 2026 to 2037

Georges works there with his wife, Elizabeth and nephew, Benoit, when they’re not out in one of the 100 parcels making up 15 hectares of vines. Benoit says the 2011s are as close to ‘normal’ in quantity, and, he hopes, quality, as he has seen the decade or so he has worked the vines. The flagship Clos des Ormes is excellent and very good value..."

Tim Atkin MW - Burgundy 2011 Special Report

  • 95 pts Georges Lignier, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

This was the last wine I tasted in en primeur week, and it was a fitting way to end. This is a pale, and delightfully traditional red, with the emphasis on balance rather than power.
Sweet, elegant and almost delicate. 2015-24

  • 94 pts Georges Lignier, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

I prefer this to the same domaine’s Clos St Denis in 2011, partly because it handles the oak better, but also because it has more sap, sweetness and finesse. Quite forward, but undeniably delicious. 2015-22
