Domaine Jean Chauvenet

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots 2021
* *

♦ 2025-2030

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2021
 *

 2021 VINTAGE

by Sarah Marsh

“A very red-fruit vintage, except in Vaucrains, and the acidity makes it very energetic. Not a heavy vintage,” remarks Christophe Drag, who used a slightly shorter vatting this year. When the density reached 1010, he just pushed the cap beneath the surface. As ever, no stems. A super-reliable domaine.

Vinous Neal Martin Millésime 2018 - November 2022

From Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022) by Neal Martin

Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru
90

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru has a high-toned, opulent bouquet with cassis fruit, iodine and peony, just obscuring some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, fleshy and forward, though lacking complexity and mineralité on the finish. A typical 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges in many respects. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
Drinking Window: 2023 - 2032

Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru
92

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a well-defined nose with more Pinoté than Gouge's Les Saint-Georges: more red fruit here and greater terroir expression. Hints of gravel and tobacco percolate through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, well-pitched acidity, taut and fresh with a lightly spiced, quite persistent finish. Clever winemaking here - this is a fine Nuits Saint-Georges that needs a couple of years to assimilate the oak. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
Drinking Window: 2024 - 2045

Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru
89

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru has a slightly laboured bouquet with dark berry fruit, undergrowth and light bergamot scents. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite dense and sinewy with a grippy, black pepper tinged finish. More dark than light in this Nuit Saint-Georges. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
Drinking Window: 2024 - 2042

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes - 90-92

The 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes has a pretty, floral nose with hints of rose petal infusing the vivid red fruit. The palate is smooth on the entry, sweet and fleshy with red cherry, strawberry and a touch of white pepper. Fine cohesion here and good length, this Vieilles Vignes is worth seeking out.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Bousselots 1er Cru - 87-89

The 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Bousselots 1er Cru has quite an opulent nose, more dictated by the growing season compared to the over-performing Vieilles Vignes. The palate is ripe and sweet with fleshy red cherry fruit, quite plump, almost Chambolle-like, but here I am just seeking a little more complexity and tension on the finish.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 2019** (p.360)

Wine Enthusiast

Les Vaucrains Premier Cru Nuits-St.-Georges – 94

This wine opens with a seductive combination of smoky oak and fresh red cherry that has a lifted edge of conifer. Slender firmness characterizes the elegant palate where pristine red fruit seems held in a crunchy, tight grip of tannins. Structure, freshness and cherry unite into a juicy, alluring and elegant wine.

2016 Les Bousselots Premier Cru Nuits-St.-Georges – 93

Notes of oak with their glossy toastiness are prominent on this wine. They accompany the red-cherry fruit on nose and palate, adding smoothness to the ripe but wonderfully tart fruit. Freshness counters the oaky richness that is heightened by fine but firm tannins.

2016 Les Perrières Premier Cru Nuits-St.-Georges – 93

Sumptuous oak leads on the nose of this wine, tinging dark cherry with hints of toast and smoke. On the palate the pristine fruit breaks through with freshness, still resting on those sonorous notions of oak. The palate is firm and crunchy but balanced by that juicy verve.

2016 Pinot Noir Nuits-St.-Georges - 91

An initial, lifted note of kirsch quickly dissipates to leave more subtle red cherry on the nose of this wine. The palate comes in with firmness, its drying tannins framing red cherry and tart berry notes. It is fresh and mouthwatering on the finish.

Matthew Jukes, En Primeur 2019, December 2020

Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Jean Chauvenet – 17.5/20

Good nose and palate and a reassuring amount of tannin and grip make this a nicely balanced wine.  This has always been a good wine for Chauvenet and it looks perfectly set up in 2019.

Nuits-Saint-Georges, 1er Cru Les Bousselots, Domaine Jean Chauvenet – 17.5 /20

More wild and structured than the village wine, this is a little raw and tough, but there is a faint degree of sweetness in the core which looks promising.

Nuits-Saint-Georges, 1er Cru Rue de Chaux, Domaine Jean Chauvenet – 17 /20

More old-style with slightly wild fruit and some more extraction and oak impact, this is a dry wine with a more pagan feel and yet it seems to suit this Cru.

Nuits-Saint-Georges, 1er Cru Les Perrières, Domaine Jean Chauvenet – 18 /20

A much finer and more polished creation which is a clear step up on the village wine, following the same, pure model and I like it enormously.

Nuits-Saint-Georges, 1er Cru Les Vaucrains, Domaine Jean Chauvenet – 18.5 /20

If Les Perrières is the most seductive of the Premier Crus, then Les Vaucrains looks positively Grand Cru in structure.  This is a beautiful wine and one which has everything I am looking for in top-flight Nuits.

Red

2018, Nuits-St-Georges Rue de Chaux 1er Cru, Domaine Jean Chauvenet

 92 – 4*

Mid purple, richer and more alcohol than the 2019: there is an undoubtedly thick texture here though the fruit is delivered fortunately with a mineral crunch behind. This is going to take a while to become accessible. Tasted: November 2020

Guide Hachette 2021, p.360

Jean Chauvenet, Nuits Saint Georges

Jean's cellars are just off the main road. Fork right as you go north out of town and you will be treated  to some of the best in town. Vineyard holdings are relatively large here  but in Bousselots, Vaucrains and Perrieres; Jean has some of the finest 1er  Cru  vineyards in the Cotes  de Nuits. Truly utstanding in recent  years such as 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011,

2015 and 2016. Son in law Christophe Drag is one of the biggest movers in quality terms. He arvests into very small crates and so cleaner and less damaged fruit can be moved directly into the fermentation vats without the need of auger or pump. Almost all the fruit was de- stemmed and there  is a cool pre-fermentation  maceration for 5 to 6 days. There are two 1er Cru vineyards north  of town and two south. As the village wine incorporates  some of the 1er Cru and finer village vineyards it is a very good buy for drinking in 2 or 3 years. The 2016 is magical now.

Nuits  Saint Georges 2017

A great red for the medium term. We’ve been trying the 2016 which is delicious;  fine now and for a few years yet. Fruit comes from 4 climats: Alliots, Charmottes,  St Jacques and St Julien. All but St Jacques are iron rich and with gravel or sand to give good drainage. The St Jacques is chalky and with mean soils. Bright and dense in appearance with just the perfect ripeness and balance of cranberry and rose petal. As well as such beauty, there  is a certain fragility but plenty of richness on the finish. An outstanding village wine. 2020 to 2024

Nuits  Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Argillas 2017

A south  facing vineyard with rows  planted east to  west  to  reduce  mid day sun burn. So there  are weighty and chewy layers of red fruit with a touch of savoury too.  More lifted, refined acids and silky tannin than in 2016, but equally inviting. 2024 to 2030.

Nuits  Saint Georges 1er Cru les Damodes 2017

From  high up  on  the  north  side of the  village  the  Damodes  2017, like  Argillas,  shows chiselled, red fruits with perky acidity and attractive aromatics. These two from north of the village are distinctive and desirable, the fingerprint of their vineyard qualities trumping the generic Nuits style. 2024 to 2031.

Nuits  Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Bousselots 2017

Still north  of the villages but sheltered, and a little lower down the hill. Soils are more clay and, in hot,  dry summers, berries  tend  to  be smaller and more  concentrated.  So here  is something else very different; blacker, brooding fruits with a hint of coolness on the finish.

2025 to 2032.

Nuits  Saint Georges 1er Cru les Perrieres 2017

It’s great to see the southern  Nuits sites back on form after such devastating frosts in 2016. The super gentle maceration and pigeage minds me of the delicacy of operations  in places such as le Pin and Haut  Brion. The result  is the  softest,  most  enticing of fruit compote balanced by the most breathtaking tension and energy. 2024 to 2024

Nuits  Saint Georges 1er Cru Vaucrains 2017

This should surely be considered for Grand Cru status; the politics though are that there are just  a  handful of  local  owners  in  les  Saint  Georges,  including the  Hospices,  but,  at neighbouring Vaucrains, there are 22, and those owners are more dispersed throughout the region. Christophe has 42 ares that produce a healthy 8 barrels. Despite very low yields the 2016 may prove to be the best Vaucrains ever;  2017 is not far behind with plenty of fruit layers, rich damson and jellied, black fruit compote.  It’s  a little on the  wild side with its myrtle and blueberry notes. Exceptional. 2026 to 2035

2021-2027

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru « Aux Argillas » 2015 **

2022-2027

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru « Les Damodes » 2015 *

Grapelive: Wine of the Day September 17, 2016

2013 Domaine Jean Chauvenet, Vosne-Romanee, Red Burgundy, France.

These 2013 red Burgundies don’t get enough credit, in fact some are vastly underrated, especially this wondrous Vosne-Romanee village wine from Jean Chauvenet, it is simply ravishing and is a wine to enjoy now, though it should age well too! I had to go back to this wine at the recent Rosenthal imports tasting, just to be sure I read the label right, yup 2013, yup just a plain wrapper Vosne-Romanee, wow, okay then, this is beautiful, vibrant and vigorous Pinot Noir from an under the radar Domaine, you should find some of this if you are a Burgundy fiend! This gorgeous Vosne-Romanee is terroir driven with heady violets, wild herbs, mineral spice and deep red, blue and black fruits showing blueberry, tree picked plum, loads of cherry and forest berry layers with a background of rose oil, minty anise, tea spice and cedar notes as well as hints of cinnamon, iron, tart currant and earth. This medium bodied Burg is graceful throughout, but with superb density and mouth feel, as you’d expect from a Vosne-Romanee, it is playful on the palate, though seriously thought provoking and lingering. This is well crafted wine, detailed and textured, I’d have really thought it was a Premier Cru at least, and at this price it is a steal, this is certainly a producer in fine form and one to follow. The Chauvenet Vosne-Romanee, I understand was 100% de-stemed fruit, gently macerated including a short cold soak with a cool and lengthy fermentation, then put in barrel to finish malo, and then aged for a year and a half in barrique with about 25% new wood. This is a beautiful and exciting Burgundy, fresh and perfumed with lushness and packed with intrigue, drink over the next 3 to 7 years, this pretty and pure red delivers nothing but class and pleasure!

GUIDE HACHETTE 2017

Oct 2015 Neal Martin 87 Drink: 2015 - 2023

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes from Jean Chauvenet has a very respectable bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, briary and just a touch of dried violet petals emerging from the glass in somewhat stately fashion. The palate is tart on the entry with pointed red cherry and strawberry fruit, although it does not "flow" like its peers and feels a little stunted on the finish. Not bad, though the domaine producer better wines in this vintage.

2012 Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Perrieres

Oct 2015 Neal Martin 92 Drink: 2016 - 2030

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Perrières from Jean Chauvenet has a endearing bouquet, very well defined with red cherries, fresh strawberries and fine mineralité. This is pure and somehow effortless, with very well handled use of oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. The acidity is spot on though there is a touch of oak to be assimilated. But there is certainly with impressive substance with a sensual, spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a very succinct and sensual Nuits-Saint Georges from Chauvenet.

2012 Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains

Oct 2015 Neal Martin 93 Drink: 2017 - 2032

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains has a very attractive bouquet with dark cherries and fresh strawberry notes, the oak very well integrated, extremely pure and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip, layers of red berry fruit-laced with white pepper and dried orange peel. There is a clear backbone to this wine - very structured but not masculine thanks to its smooth and harmonious texture. This is very charming and with the substance to age. Another sterling effort from Chauvenet in 2012...bon vin!

JANCIS ROBINSON Tasting notes on 2014 vintage. January 2016

Les Six Pièces 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Mid crimson, so much darker than the Georges Lignier wines just tasted. Much more obviously ripe fruit on the nose and thick but smooth tannins. Ripe but juicy and full of flavour. Not terribly long but well balanced in the mid palate. (JH) Drink 2017-2022 15.5

2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Mid to dark crimson. Intense and dark-fruited on the nose. Ripe and spicy. Firm, dry and compact in texture but it finishes rather abruptly. (JH) Drink 2018-2026 16

Aux Argillas Premier Cru 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Dark and spicy and quite woody. Lots of wood on the palate. A little dry, firm and compact. (JH) Drink 2017-2024 16

Aux Bousselots Premier Cru 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Very deeply coloured. Rich, dark and spicy on the nose and ripe cherry fruit. Firm and grippy. Very ripe, almost dried cherry. Good length and really fruity but just a bit burly. (JH)

Drink 2018-2026 16.5

Les Damodes Premier Cru 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Mid crimson. This is still ripe-fruited but more delicate and refined than the Bousselots. Plenty of oak, giving a light note of chocolate, but overall has greater finesse than Bousselots. Needs time for the oak to recede. (JH) Drink 2018-202816.5

Rue de Chaux Premier Cru 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Very deeply coloured. Again, very ripe cherry fruit. Inviting fruit sweetness and intensity. Chewy and flavourful and bold in structure. Not terribly long but tasty. (JH) Drink 2018-2028 16.5

Les Poulettes Premier Cru 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Deep crimson. Lifted intense cherry fruit, just the right side of ripe. Big flavours but here the tannins have much more finesse and are really fine and dry. A very different animal from the Rue de Chaux. Long too. (JH) Drink 2019-2030 17

Les Perrières Premier Cru 2014 Nuits-St-Georges

Deep crimson. An attractive interplay of ripe dark fruit and spicy oak. Thick and compact on the palate but the tannins are fully ripe and just need to soften out a bit – and there’s plenty of fruit to keep pace. Really chewy on the finish. I prefer the finesse of the Poulettes and Damodes but there’s plenty going on here. (JH)

Jean Chauvenet’s son-in-law Christophe Drag told me that 2014 was a “vintage that

produced unexpectedly high quality wines along with reasonably good quantities as well. The

growing season was uneven but not really all that challenging and I had only one parcel that

was materially attacked by the Suzukii flies and I didn’t even choose to mess with it as I just

sold it. We began picking on the 13th of September and brought in clean fruit with moderate

but adequate sugars. Because the fruit was clean we also had good if not high yields as

overall they were right at 46 hl/ha with ~43 hl/ha in the 1ers. As I noted the quality was

unexpected because before the malos had finished the wines were very hard to read. But

now that they have, it seems that each month the quality continues to rise and I am very

optimistic that 2014 is going to be an excellent vintage.” The 2013s, revisited below, were

bottled in March and April 2015.

(Rosenthal Wine Merchant, www.madrose.com, Shekomeko, NY; Berry Brothers & Rudd,

www.bbr.com, Uncorked Ltd, www.uncorked.co.uk, both UK).

2014 Bourgogne: A ripe, fresh and layered nose is comprised of essence of red berries,

plum and earth nuances. The delicious and intense flavors possess both good volume and

an attractive mouth feel, all wrapped in a balanced, firm and lingering finish. This is really

quite good for what it is and would make for an age-worthy house red. (86-89) / 2019

2014 Nuits St.-Georges: (from the northern portion of Nuits, specifically Aux Allots and Aux

St. Jacques). A subtle application of wood sets off notably ripe plum, dark cherry, spice and

humus scents. There is fine richness and volume to the concentrated medium weight flavors

that coat the palate with dry extract on the finish that is very Nuits St. Georges but not really

austere or rustic. Note that moderate patience will be required. (87-90) /2022

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Aux Argillas”: (from a tiny .17 ha parcel of vines planted

in 1992 in a little seen vineyard located at the southern end of the “Vosne” section of Nuits).

A notably floral nose, in particular lavender and violet, is composed mostly of cassis and

earth scents. There is reasonably good volume to the delicious and relatively supple flavors

that possess both good minerality and detail before culminating in a persistent and firm finale

where a touch of wood surfaces. I repeat that patience will be required as this is solidly

structured. (89-91) / 2024

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Aux Bousselots”: (Drag noted that his parcel abuts

Chaignots). There are touches of menthol and wood toast sitting atop the relatively spicy

array of cassis, plus and earth scents. The bigger, rich and markedly tighter medium weight

flavors also possess more evident minerality on the linear, focused, serious and lingering

finish. I like the tension and punch but note that this is unlikely to make for interesting

drinking young so patience required. (89-91) / 2024

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Damodes”: (from a .28 ha parcel). A softly spicy and

earthy nose combines notes of both red and blue pinot fruit with hints of sandalwood, game

and underbrush. There is excellent detail to the punchy and delicious medium weight flavors

that exhibit plenty of minerality on the explosively long, linear and serious finale. Again, this is

going to require extended bottle age and despite the obvious muscle this isn’t rustic.

(90-92) / 2026

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Lavières”: This is also quite ripe with plenty of spice,

earth and gamy nuances present on the mostly dark berry fruit liqueur-like aromas. As is

usually the case the middle weight flavors possess a more refined mouth feel while exuding

a subtle minerality on the mouth coating, balanced and youthfully austere finale. Lovely.

(88-91) / 2021

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Perrières”: (from a .23 ha parcel). This possesses

what is arguably the most complex nose in the range with its broad-based aromas of ripe

black currant, menthol, iron, animale and plenty of warm earth. I very much like the intensity

of the well-delineated and stonier middle weight flavors that possess a markedly finer mouth

feel, all wrapped in a wonderfully deep and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is terrific

and worth your interest. (91-93) / 2024

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Poulettes”: An ultra-fresh and again notably ripe

and quite spicy nose features notes of mostly black berry liqueur with soft hints of wood.

There is outstanding richness to the delicious, full-bodied and muscular flavors that possess

a caressing mouth feel before terminating in a markedly firm and very Nuits finish that avoids

undue austerity or rusticity. Provided you have the patience to wait, this is worth adding to

your cellars. (90-93) / 2026

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Rue de Chaux”: Here too the expressive nose is notably

floral which adds a touch of elegance to the otherwise distinctly earthy and gamy nose of

black raspberry, spice and wood toast aromas. There is a bit more volume to the palate

coating and concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess a velvety yet entirely serious

mouth feel while delivering excellent length on the notably structured but not hard or

especially austere finale. Patience. (90-92) / 2026

2014 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Vaucrains”: (from a .41 ha parcel). While not quite

as complex as the nose of the Perrières this is also admirably layered with its array of plum,

violet, earth, sauvage and discreet spice nuances. There is outstanding power, intensity and

size to the big-bodied flavors that exhibit huge length on the vibrant and, unusually, only a

trace of backend rusticity. The tannic spine though is pronounced and this is clearly going to

need a long time in a cool cellar before it reaches its apogee. Another one to look for

provided that you have the patience. (91-94) / 2029

2014 Vosne-Romanée: (from Ravioles). An overtly spicy and again quite fresh nose offers

up notes of Asian-style tea, red currant, violets and hints of sandalwood. The relatively

forward medium-bodied flavors possess both good intensity and vibrancy and while the finish

is not especially refined it is both balanced and persistent. (87-89) / 2021

2013 Nuits St.-Georges: (from the northern portion of Nuits, specifically Aux Allots and Aux

St. Jacques). There is a touch of herbal tea to the very fresh aromas of pungent earth,

sauvage and assorted dark berry fruit scents. This is a relatively powerful effort yet the

delicious and lightly mineral-inflected flavors possess a caressing mouth feel on the midpalate

though there is a trace of Nuits rusticity on the complex, balanced and firm finale.

(88-89) / 2020

2013 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Damodes”: (from a .28 ha parcel). There is a hint of

menthol sitting atop the ripe nose that is comprised by notes of cassis, plum, violet and

plenty of freshly turned earth scents. There is both excellent richness and volume to the fullbodied,

round and caressing flavors that coat the mouth on the velvety finale where a touch

of wood is in evidence. Lovely though note that this is very Nuits in basic character so at

least some patience will be required. 90 / 2023

2013 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Perrières”: (from a .23 ha parcel). Here too a

discreet touch of wood sets off very ripe aromas of plum and sauvage hints along with notes

of spice and earth. There is good power to the focused, intense and mineral-laden middle

weight flavors that are shaped by ripe and firm tannins before culminating in a dusty and

impressively long finish. This is a robust but not austere effort that is ultra-rich while

remaining beautifully balanced. 91 / 2023

2013 Nuits St.-Georges 1er Cru “Les Vaucrains”: (from a .41 ha parcel). A

brooding and ultra-serious nose features notes of black berry liqueur along with

plenty of earth and game nuances. There is fine verve to the imposing, robust and

overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that are shaped by very firm and somewhat rustic

tannins on the very powerful and palate coating finish. Despite the considerable size

and weight this remains very well balanced though note well that this will require

plenty of cellar time. In sum, this is textbook Vaucrains. 92 / 2025

James Handford MW - January 2016

Jean's cellars are just off the main road. Fork right as you go north out of town and you will be treated to some of the best in town. Vineyard holdings are relatively large here but in Bousselots, Vaucrains and Perrieres; Jean has some of the finest 1er Cru vineyards in the Cotes de Nuits. Truly outstanding in recent years such as 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Son in law Christophe Drag is one of the biggest movers in quality terms. He harvests into very small crates and so cleaner and less damaged fruit can be moved directly into the fermentation vats without the need of auger or pump. All fruit is de-stemmed, except in very high acid years, and there is a cool pre-fermentation maceration for 5 to 6 days. Harvest began on 13th September and most fruit was in before the heat of 18th. The differences between these vineyards are quite marked and so a few of these in the cellar make wine appreciation most rewarding. Stunning range and the Vaucrains is world beater.
Nuits Saint Georges ‘les 6 pieces’ 2014
From six well chosen sites, with vines aged no younger than 25 years, this is an exceptional glass of Burgundy. There are a few smaller wines here but not to compare with this wonderful offering. There's an almost white wine type of acid to balance intense, glace fruits. 2017 to 2021
Nuits Saint Georges 2014
We would usually offer only one of these two Nuits, but they are so remarkable in 2014 that we couldn't resist buying both! Fruit comes from 3 climats, Alliots, Charmottes and St Julien. All are iron rich and with gravel or sand to give good drainage. They come together to yield a deeply coloured, chewy, bright red and black fruit red with a tense, mineral side. There is more complexity to come. Some of the weight of 2009 here. 2018 to 2025
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Argillas 2014
A south facing vineyard which is more expressive and more typical of a wine at this stage. This one is defined by a certain tension and hardness of chalky tannin, elderberry, and cassis. Seems easier on the finish as the acids mellow nicely; perhaps one for the medium term. 2018 to 2024.
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Bousselots 2014
Just around the corner from Argillas, and often expressing warm characters, this doesn’t disappoint with pepper, spice, clove, chocolate, brooding black fruits and plenty more complexity to this soft, yet puissant and long lasting 1er Cru. 2019 to 2024
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Damodes 2014
One of the best known vineyards and deservedly so. These vines were planted by the young Jean Chauvenet and his father in 1953 and 1954. Silky on the mid palate with a natural feel of red and black cherry fruit. Fine and sweet, more red fruit finish. Damodes is always the most silky, soft and chocolate textured of these. It seems even more so in 2014 vintage. 2018 to 2026
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Rue de Chaux 2014
Moving south of town these wines tend to be a little denser and slightly softer. There are only 3 barrels of this one (normally 4 or 5). Dense and creamy, delicate fruits and a big blob of ripe acidity on the mid palate. The finish is more fruit dominant; raspberry, redcurrant and ripe rhubarb. This will evolve well in the medium term. 2018 to 2023
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Poulettes 2014
So rare it should be called ‘Dents de Poulettes’. The vineyard is quite remote, high up and under the cliffs on the southern side and rarely visited by any other than the farmers on foot, and so it’s a sanctuary for wild game. There's a perfect balance between slatey and salty mineral notes with super ripe fruits. These will knit together well in 8 years or so. 2020 to 2025
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Perrieres 2014
Coming to the business end of this selection now and, as in 2013, the Perrieres is right up there with the might Vaucrains. Clean, Pinot nose with hints of strawberry, silky chocolate and light spice. This will mature into a unique, yet popular style; mint, choc chip, and herbal notes of Vermouth, citrus peel and red fruit complexity. This is what we buy Burgundy for! 2024 to 2029
Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Vaucrains 2014
This should surely be considered for Grand Cru status; the politics though are that there are just a handful of local owners in les Saint Georges, including the Hospices, but, at neighbouring Vaucrains, there are 22, and those owners are more dispersed throughout the region. Christophe has 42 ares that usually produce a healthy 8 barrels. Gorgeous, brooding, buttery, mocha, light spice and with bramble and loganberry fruits. Nothing too powerful and all very elegant. Cool and long on the finish. Grand Cu quality. 2026 to 2034

Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru Les Damodes 2013

Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru Les Bousselots 2013

Nuits-saint-georges 1er cru Les Perrières 2012 Domaine Jean Chauvenet

 * Vin très réussi

Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru Vaucrains 2012

- Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru Pruliers 2010 : 15.5/20

- Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru Les Vaucrains 2010 : 15.5/20

Wine Spectator

The Buying Guide

92. Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru « Les Damodes » 2007 $88
This is well-marked by oak, with ample fruit and flesh to match. The overall impression is
very seductive, revealing black cherry, blackberry, vanilla and mineral notes all wrapped in a suave package, with a long, lingering aftertaste. Best from 2012 through 2022. – B.S.

The score:
95-100: Classic: a great wine
90-94: Oustanding: a wine of superior character and style.
85-89: Very good: a wine with special qualities
80-84: Good: a solid, well-made wine
75-79: Mediocre: a drinkable wine that may have minor flaws
50-74: Not Recommended

Jancis Robinson

BURGUNDY 2007 TASTING NOTES
26 Jan 2009 by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding

  • Nuits-St-Georges 2007 Rouge 16 Drink 2011-14

Light crimson. Fresh and fragrant and (just) sufficiently ripe. Very structured with
quite a bit of oak in evidence. Ambitious and very Nuits - solid even if not seductive!

  • Les Damodes Premier Cru 2007 Nuits-St-Georges Rouge 16.5 Drink 2011-15

Meaty and rich and pretty flashy even if not the subtlest. Good for those who seek
fairly early gratification.

  • Rue de Chaux Premier Cru 2007 Nuits-St-Georges Rouge 16 Drink 2012-16

Smoky, almost charred nose. Sweet start and very direct cherry flavours. Chewy
finish. Needs a little time to settle down as it's a bit coarse at the moment.
