Origine
The origins of the “Barony of Saint-Lager” date back to 1432 when the Lhaye family acquired a provost house formerly belonging to the Lords of Beaujeu. The domaine covered the entire side of the Brouilly hill. Today, the Domaine’s wines are produced at the foot of this famous hill. The “Gamay à jus blanc” vines are around 50 years old and thrive in the sandy loan soil, enjoying a south-southeast exposure. The Domaine’s vines are planted at 10,000 plants/ha.
Vinification
All the work carried out in the vineyards is aimed at carefully controlling the yield. The grapes are harvested by hand and go into vat in whole bunches. Maceration lasts 7 to 9 days depending on the vintage. The wine is aged in casks and tanks.
Notes de dégustation
The wine has a playful bright cherry red hue, hinting at the refreshing pleasures that lie ahead. Its initial aromas are those of blackberries and other black fruit such as blueberries and blackcurrants, yet the finish is delicate and floral with a bouquet reminiscent of roses and peonies. The black fruit can be found again on the palate, which is lovely and fresh. The finish is underpinned by lovely silky tannins.
Mets d'accompagnements
Ideal with light meats such as chicken from Bresse, guinea fowl or pigeon. Pork dishes are another nice option. This Brouilly can be enjoyed when young but may surprise you after a few years ageing in the cellar.
